Reinstall of Windows Domain Controller: CSNT

csnt.unl.edu was reinstalled today. Hopefully this will resolve some of the ongoing printing problems this server has been having.

This server acts as the login server for the windows domain, print server, DNS server, UDB synchronization server, account status check server, and hosts a few shares.

All print drives had to be reinstalled from scratch. Users may need to delete and re-add printers if they get errors while attempting to print. This would be a result of the print drives not matching the version on the print server. Please notify manager@cse.unl.edu if you experience printing issues that cannot be fixed.

Windows Terminal Server was upgrade to Windows 2008.

The departmental windows terminal server (csnt-ts.unl.edu) was upgraded to a new 8 core server running Windows 2008. Pls notify manager@cse.unl.edu about any software that might have not been installed or other issues. Below is a quick list of known issues.

  • The login dialog in Windows 2008 does not have a pull down menu to select the "log onto domain" like in earlier version of windows. Most remote desktop clients allow you to specify the login domain - which is "cs.unl.edu" - along with the user and password before the client connects to the terminal server. If you are unable to provide the authentication information thru the client, the other alternative is to login with "cs.unl.edu\user name" as your login ID.

  • Certain 64 bit print drivers are crashing when run on AMD x64. We have replaced non working drivers with alternate drivers for common printers. If you have any printing problems, please notify manager@cse.unl.edu

  • Internet Explorer 8.0 might not launch. The Sophos IE add-on needs to be disabled. Launch the Internet options control panel applet, under the programs tab, click on manage add-ons and disable the Sophos add-on.

  • Certain Mac Remote desktop clients will not be able to connect to the terminal server. If you are having problems connecting to the terminal server, upgrade your remote desktop client. Contact manager@cse.unl.edu if you continue to have problems connecting.

  • Linux rdesktop clients may need to have the "-4" flag specified to connect to the Windows 2008 terminal server.

Suphp configured on csce.unl.edu

Php scripts have been configured to run under suphp on csce instead of safe_mode. Scripts in user's homedirectores will now run as the user instead of the web user. csce should be used to test pending php functionality before cse.unl.edu is upgraded to php6.

Historically, php scripts had to be world readable since they were executed by mod_php (the web server's php engine). Safe mode was introduced as a way of preventing one user's php code from gaining access to sensitive code and database passwords that might be stored in another user's php code. In php6, safe mode is being eliminated. We will be deploying suphp instead as a replacement to safe mode. Under suphp, php scripts will actually execute as the user who owns the script. Scripts with passwords and other sensitive information can now simply be set to readable only by the users and not have to world readable. In addition, any files created by the php code will be owned by the user instead of the web server which is a severe drawback of mod_php.

Contact manager@cse.unl.edu with questions and issues.
